Q. Why do paving stones make a better pavement
than asphalt or concrete?
A. Unlike asphalt
and poured concrete, paving stones are virtually maintenance free. They are double
the strength and do not require to be replaced or sealed regularly. Paving stones
also provide a rigid, yet flexible pavement that will allow room for expansion
and contraction according to the freezing and thawing cycles. Each paving stone
provides expansion joint that allows for movement. Concrete slabs, unlike
paving stones, have expansion joints formed and precut into them. The expansion
joints found in paving stones prevent cracking found in concrete and asphalt.
Q. Do paving stones lose color over time?
A. No, color in paving stones does not fade.
Dirt, wear, and weathering may discolor over time. To prevent, or enhance color,
cleaning and sealing are recommended.
Q.
If paving stones are stained or damaged, can they be cleaned or replaced? A.
Absolutely. Certain cleaning products can be used, depending on the nature of
the stain. Otherwise, permanently stained or damaged stones can be removed and
replaced.
Q. Will weeds grow between my
paving stones?
A. Weeds do not germinate underneath
the stones; the growth of weeds or grass is a result of seeds blowing into, and
being lodged in the joint sand. The control of weed growth is simple; use any
of the following: weed killer, herbicide, sealer or sand binders.
Q.
What snow removal methods should be used? A.
Paving stones are designed for winter conditions including de-icing salts. Paving
stones can also be shoveled and plowed like concrete or asphalt pavements, just
as long as they have been installed correctly!
Q.
Will paving stones be slippery? A. No, the
texture of the surface is ideal for obtaining a safe traction in walkways, patios,
driveways, and surrounding pool areas.
Q.
What is Efflorescence? A. Efflorescence is
the occurrence of natural salts in the raw materials that settle on the surface
of the stones. This is common with all masonry products. Efflorescence does not
affect the structural integrity, nor will dissipate over time. If desired, it
can be removed using specialty cleaners.
